Sommelier Notes

The Turkey Flat Vineyard boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Planted in 1847, these hard-working gnarled old vines are still producing fantastic grapes. They are dry grown with their roots extending metres into the soil in search of moisture.

Much of the credit for the best Shiraz made in the Barossa is due to old vines such as these. The fact that these vines still exist is largely due to a far-sighted quarantine scheme, in which South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated the vineyards of Europe, America and subsequently parts of Australia in the late 1800’s.

This shiraz is a result of a very intricate blending process. After each parcel of fruit is individually vinified & aged in specially selected French oak barrels, the final blend is created with careful consideration to upholding its reputation for cellaring gracefully, retaining its freshness and balance for many years.

This year we were honoured with the Turkey Flat Shiraz receiving the Barossa Trust Mark. The Barossa Trust Mark is a mark of aspirational standard set by the Barossa region. It provides you with a guarantee and assurance of quality.

Awards Notes

All the mainstream red winemaking options are used, demanding (and receiving) unrelenting attention to detail. This is a hero Barossa Valley shiraz, with great colour, profound complexity, yet retaining a calm personality within its array of primary, fresh flavours. Drink to 2044. Red star great value

A dry winter in 2013 reduced yields and led to an early bud burst. Strong February rains relieved a hot and dry summer leading to a slow and even ripening period giving each parcel of fruit priority of attention.

With fresh raspberry, dark savoury olive character and lively cassis, the 2014 Shiraz has supple elegance and a complex palate fit for many years to come. Our oak integration is modest and performs a complimentary role in expressing and defining Shiraz as we see it; a wine of prettiness and purity.
