Joining the list of flourishing new start ups in Darwin comes the region’s first boutique online wine retailer and personal cellaring service.
Piper Collective was created by local husband and wife team Kelly and Mike Hope who said they thought the time was ripe to bring a service like this to Darwin.
“Darwin’s start up scene is booming and in addition to that we’re experiencing a food revolution right now,” Kelly said. “We’re seeing more and more urban and sophisticated venues pop up, and the local market, food van, and festival scene has never been bigger.
“People in Darwin have discerning palates and we think there is a local appetite for a fine wine and cellaring service.”
As a local business the service is completely tailored to the Territory’s needs. All wine is transported in a refrigerated case and cellared in a climate controlled, purpose built facility right here in Darwin. Kelly said this means less waiting time and wine that will last.
“We’ve had one too many bottles ruined by heat and exposure to sunlight,” Kelly said. “Working with our sommelier we’ve done a lot of research into the right way to store wine in our tropical conditions so it will age beautifully.
“And because our selection is all stored here in Darwin we cut delivery time by at least two days compared to other online stores. We’ll be transporting all our orders in refrigerated trucks and hand delivering them at a time that you prefer – so your order will never sit on your doorstep in the hot sun.”
The Piper Collective cellaring service offers people the chance to beat the heat by storing their personal collection in a purpose built facility. The climate controlled cellar features CC TV security, atlas refrigeration, secure vaults and vibration sensitive security.
The wine list has been sourced from all over Australia, with the help of one of Australia’s best sommeliers, Jeff Salt. Jeff is currently Group Sommelier for Collins Square Hospitality Group in Melbourne, and has curated a list that offers labels like Jim Barry, Cullen Wines and Deviation Road.
“We believe Piper Collective will change the way Darwin buys and stores fine wine,” Kelly said. “It’s exciting to launch Piper Collective and make our mark on Darwin’s excellent local food and wine scene.”
